How do supermassive black holes get so big? A peculiar diet, perhaps.
New research suggests that the supermassive black holes at the cores of some galaxies could grow so large by consuming one star from a binary system and flinging the other into space.
For years, astronomers have puzzled over the diet needed to bulk up supermassive black holes ? powerful gravitational traps that lurk in the centers of galaxies.
Skip to next paragraphNow, scientists have added a new ingredient that they say could account for a substantial portion of a supermassive black hole's heft: stars wrested from binary star systems that wandered too close for their own good.
One star in a binary paring gets ejected from the galaxy at extraordinary speeds. The star left behind orbits even closer to the black hole, joining other stars the black hole has orphaned.
At some point, the zone in which the orphans orbit reaches its capacity. After that, gravitational interactions between all the orphans virtually guarantee that when a new star enters the zone, another star must vanish into the black hole itself, signaling its end with a brief flash of high-energy radiation.
Since about half of the stars in the galaxy appear as binary pairs, they should be abundant enough to feed the process, the team holds.
The calculations that led to this scenario represent ?a proof of concept,? notes Scott Kenyon, a researcher at the Harvard-Smithsonian?Center for Astrophysics, based in Cambridge, Mass., and a member of the team formally presenting the scenario today in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.?
Processes operating at the heart of the Milky Way, and by extension other galaxies, aren't well understood, Dr. Kenyon explains. The team hopes its work will help open a window on those processes ? in particular, how supermassive black holes grow.
Black holes are objects with gravity so strong that not even light can escape. So-called stellar mass black holes form from the remnants of a massive star that ends its life in an enormous explosion known as a supernova.
But the path from a stellar-mass black hole to a supermassive black hole with the mass of millions or billions of stars is far less clear. A range of possible explanations exists for starting the process ? from the direct collapse of a gas cloud to the slow accumulation and merger of stellar-mass black holes at a galaxy's center.
Unfortunately, ?they all have problems,? Kenyon says.
Enter binary stars, which became candidates as black-hole fodder through a somewhat circuitous route.
In 1988, when the study of supermassive black holes in galaxies was in its infancy, Jack Hills, an astrophysicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, proposed that the smoking gun for a supermassive black hole at the center a galaxy would come in the form of stars vaulting from the galactic center at speeds of more than 1 million miles an hour ? essentially fast enough to escape from the galaxy. He calculated that the gravitational interaction of a supermassive black hole with a close-in binary star would eject one of the two stars and draw the remaining orphan ever closer.

Link between violent computer games and aggressiveness questioned
ScienceDaily (Apr. 2, 2012) ? There is a long-lasting and at times intense debate about the possible link between violent computer games and aggressiveness. A group of researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, are now questioning the entire basis of the discussion. In a recently published article, they present a new study showing that, more than anything, a good ability to cooperate is a prerequisite for success in the violent gaming environment.
Researchers argue that gamers not only learn to cooperate but also to understand complex contexts, understand how skills can be improved, and think through cause and effect relationships.The opposing camp, on the other hand, is convinced that the games may foster violent and aggressive behaviour outside the gaming environment.
Complex gaming situations
The study, authored by Ulrika Bennerstedt, Jonas Ivarsson and Jonas Linderoth and titled "How gamers manage aggression: Situating skills in collaborative computer games," is presented in International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning.
The Gothenburg-based research group spent hundreds of hours playing online games and observing other gamers, including on video recordings. They focused on complex games with portrayals of violence and aggressive action where the participants have to fight with and against each other. 'The situations gamers encounter in these games call for sophisticated and well-coordinated collaboration. We analysed what characteristics and knowledge the gamers need to have in order to be successful,' says Jonas Ivarsson, Docent (Reader) at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning.
Strategy and timing
It turns out that a successful gamer is strategic and technically knowledgeable, and has good timing. Inconsiderate gamers, as well as those who act aggressively or emotionally, generally do not do well. 'The suggested link between games and aggression is based on the notion of transfer, which means that knowledge gained in a certain situation can be used in an entirely different context. The whole idea of transfer has been central in education research for a very long time. The question of how a learning situation should be designed in order for learners to be able to use the learned material in real life is very difficult, and has no clear answers,' says Ivarsson.
'In a nutshell, we're questioning the whole gaming and violence debate, since it's not based on a real problem but rather on some hypothetical reasoning,' he says.

YES! It definitely is. In fact, it can increase your athletic performance, increase your flexibility and helps to prevent injuries. The reason increased flexibility improves your athletic ability is because it mobilizes joints. Think about it- with better joint movement and better range of motion you will open the door to a number of exercises that you were unable to do before.? When you aren?t flexible well then it can be challenging to do exercises, you have limited mobility and a limited range of motion. For example, you may have a lot of tension in your traps/shoulder area as most do. This means that the muscle is at a continuing shortening state and there is no release for the muscle. The tense state causes constant pulling of the muscle; this could lead to injuries with your rotator cuff. If you muscle is tight around your traps it causes the muscle around your shoulder to pulled (toward your traps) in turn causing instability in the shoulder area. Someone with this problem is going to have difficulties performing exercises that involve the shoulder joint, exercises such as a military press.
Stretching also increases blood flow to the area; so the more you stretch the more efficient your body is at delivering blood to tissues and muscles. Ever stretch when you are really sore? Do you feel a nice release? Do you end up being not as sore? All of these physiological changes are because there is a release in the muscle, the myofascial release has occurred. The fascia (tissue or connective tissue) which provides support to the muscle is inflamed when sore (because of the demand placed on the muscle prior). Ever notice why your clothes seem a little bit tighter the day or two after a hard workout? The first phase of muscle repair is inflammation. When inflammation is present it can be a bit uncomfortable so I suggest stretching or foam rolling. The myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy where it lengthens/releases the tightness in the fascia; it removes restrictions on the muscle. Always drink a lot of water when foam rolling or stretching, all the toxins that were in the muscle have now been release into the blood stream. This release can cause headaches so it is best to hydrate and remove them from the body.
Always take time to take care of your body and this includes stretching especially after a workout. Always warm the muscles up before a workout and definitely give a nice stretch after, the muscles are warm and will get the most from the stretch.
