PHILADELPHIA (February 24, 2012) A new report from researchers at the Drexel University School of Public Health identifies patterns in the misuse of illicit drugs among young adults who also misuse prescription drugs. The report, "Misuse of Prescription and Illicit Drugs among High-Risk Adults" in Los Angeles and New York, was recently published in the first issue of the Journal of Public Health Research.

This is the first report to compare patterns of prescription and illicit drug misuse among high-risk young adults who are already misusing prescription drugs. Dr. Stephen Lankenau, associate professor at Drexel and principal investigator, and colleagues, suggest that drug treatment providers should be aware of this pattern of drug use to treat their clients more effectively.

Between 2009 and 2011, Lankenau and colleagues interviewed 596 young adults between the ages of 16 and 25 in Los Angeles and New York who had misused prescription drugs within the previous 90 days. The study included interviews with three high-risk groups of young adults: injection drug users (IDUs), homeless persons and polydrug users (users who combine drugs during a drug-using event).

Results showed that participants commonly received prescriptions for opioids, tranquilizers and stimulants, prior to misusing these drugs. In addition, using prescription drugs and illicit drugs at the same time was common in both cities. Drug users tended to use an illicit drug that provided a similar effect as the prescription drug they were already misusing.

The two cities also provided contrasting drug markets, which influenced the types of drugs misused. New York participants more frequently misused oxycodone, heroin and cocaine, while Los Angeles participants more frequently misused codeine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Last year, Lankenau and colleagues published findings about the pathway to drug misuse among a subset of this study population, which indicated that misuse of prescription opioids often preceded the use of injected drugs.

Lankenau is a sociologist who combines public health concerns and mixed-method research designs to the study of high-risk youth, out-of-treatment drug users, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS. In addition to this recent study, he is leading evaluation studies of overdose prevention programs in Los Angeles and Philadelphia to determine programs that effectively reduce the risks of fatal drug overdoses. He teaches graduate courses that apply qualitative methods to the study of public health issues. Lankenau received a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and a postdoctoral fellowship funded by NIDA.

Libya and France boost military cooperation

TRIPOLI, Feb 26 ? Libya and France have agreed to look into boosting maritime security and controlling the North African country?s borders, their defence ministers said yesterday.

On a visit to Tripoli, French Defence Minister Gerard Longuet met his Libyan counterpart Osama al-Juwali to discuss the issues and sign a letter of intent to boost cooperation.

Foreign states are worried about the Libyan interim government?s capacity to secure its Mediterranean coast, which could be used as a gateway into Europe for arms traffickers, al Qaeda insurgents and illegal migrants.

The Libyan conflict has also created new problems for the fragile region to its south.

Regional governments have warned that instability in Libya after the end of Muammar Gaddafi?s rule is allowing weapons taken from Gaddafi?s arsenal to fall into the hands of al Qaeda?s north African branch and other insurgent groups across the Sahara desert.

?Libya?s strategic position joining Africa with the Mediterranean makes it an exposed territory. We have decided to put in a place a working Franco-Libyan committee to look at all these points,? Longuet told a joint news conference.

?This will bring together military staff, engineers, technicians and diplomats who will work on these issues. Cooperation between Libya and France is a long-term project.?

Two French warships arrived at Tripoli?s port last month carrying navy crewmen to train the Libyan navy and help demine oil ports. The ministers said a number of Libyan divers would be trained by France.

Juwali thanked France for the leading role it took in backing last year?s rebellion against Muammar Gaddafi?s rule.

?The cooperation between France and Libya is developing day by day,? he said. ?They have expressed their readiness to give us the necessary technical advice to secure our borders.?

In December, French army chief of staff Admiral Edouard Guillaud said France was ready to offer military training to Libya and was examining ways to boost its co-operation with the new government.

Longuet also met the chairman of Libya?s ruling National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel Jalil. ? Reuters

Watching world class mixed martial arts in the Land of the Rising Sun was truly historic, as the UFC returned to Japan for the first time in over a decade. On an action-packed main card, Anthony ?Showtime? Pettis scored a highlight reel knockout over Joe Lauzon. Crowd favorites Rampage Jackson and Yushin Okami suffered surprising upset losses to Ryan Bader and Tim Boetsch, respectively. To cap off the evening, Ben Henderson edged Frankie Edgar in an absolute war to capture the UFC Lightweight crown.

Lightweight Division (155 lbs.):

Anthony ?Showtime? Pettis (14-2, 1-1 UFC) vs. Joe ?J-Lau? Lauzon (21-6, 8-3 UFC)

Round 1:

Pettis starts with a left head kick partially blocked by Lauzon. Lauzon pawing with the jab, trying to find his range. Lauzon presses inside with punches, and backs Pettis to the cage. Pettis tries to answer with his hands, but Lauzon covers up well. Pettis lands an ENORMOUS left head kick that hurts Lauzon bad. ?Showtime? pounces on the fallen fighter and lands three piston-like right hands, turning Lauzon?s lights out and stopping the fight in scintillating fashion.

Anthony ?Showtime? Pettis wins by KO at 1:21 of Round 1. With the win, Pettis is on the short list of contenders for a lightweight title shot.
Featherweight Division (145 lbs.):

Hatsu Hioki (25-4-2, 1-0 UFC) vs. Bart Palaszewski (36-14, 1-0 UFC)

Round 1:

The fighters trade jabs, and then Palazewski briefly gets dropped by a counter punch. Bart hops back up, and then the featherweights trade right low kicks. Hioki landing an array of kicks now, mixing it up nicely with front kicks and low kicks. Hioki works for a single and gets it, winds up in Palazewski?s guard. Hioki passes to half guard, and is looking to pass to side. Hioki easily passes to side control and is now looking for a crucifix. Hioki working nice ground and pound and controlling Palazewski. Hioki is going to town on Palazewski?s head with left hands while completely controlling him from side control. Now Hioki is mixing in left elbow strikes as well. Palazewski gives up his back and Hioki goes for an armbar that?s in deep. Somehow Palazewski keeps rolling, fighting, and escapes the armbar attempt but winds up on his back. Hioki back in guard landing solid elbows and punches. 10-8 round for Hioki.

Round 2:

Hioki and Palazewski are pawing at each other with jabs and light kicks, trying to find the range for a big shot. Nice combination for Palazewski, his first good offense of the fight. Hioki lands a right head kick that looks somewhat lethargic. The pace has slowed significantly. Nice body shot by Hioki. Good two piece and a biscuit by Palazewski. Solid right outside leg kick by Palazewski. Another outside leg kick by Palazewski, and a right hand to the body. Bart comes in with a double jab and then lands another right outside leg kick. Palazewski starting to land more lunches now. Hioki shoots for a double leg takedown at the end and briely takes Palazewski?s back to close the round. 10-9 round for Palazewski.

Round 3:

Hioki presses Palazewski against the cage and gets the trip takedown. Hioki in side control, again scoring points with ground and pound. Palazewski regains half guard but is eating left hands to his head. Now Hioki passes to side control again. Palazewski regains half guard as the positional battle continues, and the process repeats itself. Hioki again passes into side control, and now he is trying to set up the mounted crucifix position. Impressive ground control by Hatsu Hioki. Palazewski gives up his back and turtles while Hioki continues to throw punches. Now Hioki gets both hooks in, and is looking for a rear naked choke. Palazewski defending nicely thus far. Slightly over a minute to go in the final round. Hioki looking for an arm lock now, but realistically he looks to be riding out a decision. Hioki lands a few elbows at the bell. 10-9 Round for Hioki.

The Judges score the fight 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Hatsu Hioki.

Middleweight Division (185 lbs.):

Tim ?The Barbarian? Boetsch (14-4, 5-3 UFC) vs. Yushin ?Thunder? Okami (26-6, 10-3 UFC)

Round 1:

The fighters paw for range and nothing lands initially. Boetsch lands a straight right hand, and steps forward with a nice combo. Yushin with a one-two. Okami in his southpaw stance, throws a nice stiff right jab. Another stiff jab stops Boestch in his tracks. ?The Barbarian? is already swelling and bleeding under his left eye from the jabs of Okami. Boestch shoots for a single which is easily shrugged off by Okami. ?Thunder? is controlling the standup with his jab and takedown defense. Big right hand by Okami. Boetsch misses with a wild uppercut. Nice right head kick by Okami. Right body kick by Boetsch. Another good jab from Okami. Inside leg kick by Boetsch. Lead right hook by Boetsch is blocked. Boetsch looking to bulldoze his way forward, lands a right hand. Left knee to the body lands for Okami. 10-9 round for Okami.

Round 2:

Boetsch is cut over both cheeks now as the middleweights begin Round 2. Boetsch wading in with punches, missing everything and looking sloppy. Okami still picking him apart with measured jabs and superior boxing. Good knee to the body by ?Thunder.? Boetsch is now with his back against the cage as Okami secures double underhooks. Okami takes Boetsch down with a double leg. Boetsch looking for a guillotine choke, but doesn?t have the guard fully locked in. Okami works out of the guillotine and passes into half guard. Okami looking for an arm-triangle choke. ?Thunder? now attempting a far side kimura from the half guard. Okami moves to mount and is torqueing Boetsch?s arm. Okami gives up the lock, and starts throwing bombs from the top. Okami briefly goes for an arm-triangle, but again abandons the submission in favor of more ground and pound from the mount. 10-8 round for Okami.

Round 3:

The fighters clinch and throw strikes while grappling, then Boetsch connects with a solid right hand on the break. Big straight right hand by Boetsch hurts Okami and has him running. Boetsch swarms with punches and is destroying Okami with uppercuts in the clinch. Okami is able to briefly escape but Boetsch tracks him down again and clinches. More devastating short right uppercuts drop Okami against the cage. Boetsch seals the deal with three left hands to Okami?s head, completing an incredible comeback victory.

Tim ?The Barbarian? Boetsch wins by TKO at :54 of Round 3.

Welterweight Division (170 lbs.):

Yoshihiro ?Sexyama? Akiyama (13-4, 1-3 UFC) vs. Jake Shields (26-6-1, 1-2 UFC)

Round 1:

Shields lands a nice straight right but fails on his first takedown attempt. Akiyama misses with a one-two. Shields shoots for single and Akiyama hops backwards to the cage. ?Sexyama? pushes Shields head down, then whizzers him and spins him on the cage. Impressive judo strength by Akiyama. The fighters break and Akiyama dodges Shields? punches. Akiyama lands a solid right uppercut, and thwarts another takedown. Shields is able to secure standing back control and threatens a takedown, but Akiyama?s base is too strong and he spins free. Shields hits him with a left hook on the break. Sick trip takedown by Akiyama, kicked the legs out of Shields while throwing him down. Then when Shields stands up, Akiyama judo throws him down again. Shields misses with some punches, but lands a couple jabs near the end of the round. 10-9 round for Akiyama.

Round 2:

Akiyama stuffs another takedown and lands a straight right. Good spinning backfist by ?Sexyama.? Akiyama is dominating the fight but stopping every one of Shields? takedowns, and landing the better strikes. Now Shields gets a couple good jabs going. Akiyama responds with the same. Shields glances at the clock which shows just over two minutes. Heavy right leg kick by Akiyama. Good right straight by Shields. Emphatic judo throw by Akiyama. Shields pops up and shoots for a double. Akiyama again stuffs it and works for position on the cage. Shields is able to get the standing back position but there isn?t enough time left in the round. 10-9 round for Akiyama.

Round 3:

Good jab by Shields. Nice inside leg kick, left leg kick to the body combo by Shields. Another nice jab by Shields. Jake lands a couple light leg kicks. Shields shoots for a double, but is shrugged aside by ?Sexyama.? Shields finally gets Akiyama down for an instant, but Yoshiro gets up fast. Jake Shields just clinching, not doing much, the ref separates him. Shields with a nice takedown and takes Akiyama?s back. Akiyama twice grabbed the fence while trying to stop the takedown, ref should?ve taken a point away. Shields has both hooks in and is working for a rear-naked choke. Akiyama with decent defense, as the fighters roll, Shields maintains back control. 10-9 round for Shields.

The judges score the fight 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Jake Shields.

Heavyweight Division (265 lbs.):

Cheick Kongo (17-6-2, 10-4-1 UFC) vs. Mark ?Super Samoan? Hunt (7-7, 2-1 UFC)

Round 1:

Hunt throws a right leg kick that lands, but he slips and falls backwards. As he gets up Kongo tries to blitz him against the cage, but Hunt clinches nicely. The ?Super Samoan? spins Kongo, and then escapes back to striking range. Hunt misses with a lead left hook. The heavyweights trade right leg kicks, then Kongo steps in with a straight right hand. Hunt counters with a nasty left hand that drops Kongo. Cheick gets up but doesn?t look the same, and Hunt smells blood. Vintage Rampage slam from the PRIDE era. Bader rises and eats a knee and left hook. Now a right body kick connects for Jackson. Rampage steps in and lands a thumping left body shot, but Bader takes him down with a double. Bader in half guard working light strikes. Bader wearing down Jackson with top control and body shots. Rampage finally able to stand back up but gets thrown down by Bader. Bader has the back of Rampage as Jackson is turtled. Round 3:

Bader presses Rampage on the fence some more. Bader with a nice takedown and lands in side control. Now working knees to Rampage?s body. Jackson regains guard. Rampage gets up for a brief moment but Bader gets him right back down. Bader methodically working top control, looking to grind out a decision victory as the crowd boos. Bader going for a kimura with less than a minute to go. Rampage defends and is able to break free. Bader lands a couple elbows then goes for a choke, but the horn sounds to end the fight.

The judges score the fight 30-27, 30-27, and 30-27 for the winner by unanimous decision, Ryan ?Darth? Bader.

Henderson begins hoping backwards on one foot and then attempts a crazy spinning kick that misses. Edgar briefly scores a takedown but Henderson is right back up. And the exchanges are even when Henderson is on one leg. Crazy fight. The fighters clinch and Henderson lands a nice knee. Big knee to the body by Henderson. Nice left hook by ?The Answer.? Edgar trips Benson down and gets on top, then goes for the guillotine as his opponent stands. Henderson escapes and is jabbing at Edgar?s swollen eye. Henderson pawing and missing with the jab, Edgar lands a leg kick. Henderson busts Edgar?s nose open again with a jab. Edgar tries for a takedown which Henderson defends, but ?The Answer? lands a right hand on the break. Henderson continuing to move forward with the jab and scores points with a nice combo. Edgar throws a right head kick which exposes him for the takedown, and Henderson capitalizes. Henderson lands a couple shots in half guard, then Edgar gets back up. Nice left head kick by Henderson. Edgar with an inside leg kick. Henderson with more forward pressure. Double jab and body kick by Henderson. Left leg kick by Henderson catches the champ low, and the ref gives time to recover. The fight resumes, and Edgar lands a leg kick. Henderson with a nice jab, Edgar with a better counter right. Edgar takes down Henderson and ?Smooth? locks in a guillotine in full guard. It looks tight at first, but Henderson doesn?t have the right grip on the hands, and Edgar escapes. Henderson is able to get back to his feet. Big right leg kick by Henderson, then a knee. Right leg kick by Henderson pushes Edgar against the cage, then a very nice jab connects afterwards. The fighters each flurry to finish the frame, but neither connects to steal the round. 10-9 round for Henderson.

Round 5:

Good stepping right hand by Edgar, nice counter left by Henderson in response. Big straight left lands flush for Edgar, Henderson doesn?t seem rattled by it though. Good jab by Henderson. Edgar clinches him against the cage, and gets him down briefly. Good leg kick by Edgar. Nice right hand by Edgar, you could hear the impact of that one. Edgar lands a right hand that appears to drop Henderson. Benson gets up and looks fine. Henderson throws another body kick which lands and is caught. Edgar shoots for a single but is stuffed. Ten seconds to go and ?Smooth? lands a big flying knee to the body, guillotine attempt, and two elbows. May have stolen the round. 10-9 round for Henderson.

The Judges score the fight 49-46, 48-47, and 49-46, for the winner by unanimous decision and the new UFC lightweight champion of the world, Ben ?Smooth? Henderson.

Powering Up...With A Microbial Fuel Cell

You're listening to SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. What if you could light up a streetlight just by plugging it into the ground, using bacteria in the soil to power it? Sounds a little crazy or sci-fi. But my next guest has actually done something very similar, building a fuel cell that uses bacteria to generate electricity. And it pumped out enough juice to power a small LED bulb. This isn't some new breed of genetically engineered bugs from the lab. You can find these bacteria just by scooping up some river mud as our researchers did.

So why not harness the millions of trillions of bacteria out there to help out with our electricity needs? And how close are we to scaling this up from microbial fuel cells to microbial power plants? Grant Burgess is a professor of marine biotechnology at Newcastle University in the U.K. He is author of a study out this week in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. He joins us by phone. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY, Dr. Burgess.

DR. GRANT BURGESS: Good afternoon, Ira. It's a pleasure to be on your show.

FLATOW: Well, thank you very much. How do you get electricity from bacteria? How simple is it?

BURGESS: Well, it's an amazing phenomenon, actually. And as you said earlier, it's also a well-known phenomenon. In fact, Professor Michael Potter first described this as far back as 1911. And he showed that bacteria could be used to generate electrons and that those electrons could be captured onto an electrode to create an electrical current.

FLATOW: We had a researcher a couple of years ago - well, actually, in 2010, from the U.S. Naval Research Lab, and she had found mud in the Potomac that you stuck probes into it and it generated electricity.

BURGESS: That's right, that's right. I mean, in a sense it's similar to the way you and I would obtain electricity from eating, you know, eating a chocolate bar. You know, the chemical energy is converted by the metabolism in your cell to a load of electrons, and you know, in your own body. Those electrons are converted into the energy-generating molecule ATP, whereas in bacteria we can actually harvest those electrons and use them ourselves. You know, we can capture them and use them as a source of electricity. So it's really quite exciting.

FLATOW: What's also quite interesting about your research is the name of the bacterium that you...

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: Yes, indeed. I'll just read them out, actually, because the names are lovely: Bacillus stratosphericus and Bacillus altitudinis. And amazingly, although we found these bacteria, as you said, in estuarine mud in the northeast of England, they were actually first observed and first isolated approximately 25 miles up in the upper stratosphere of the Earth.

Wow. So they were floating around up there and settling down or vice versa? Coming up from the mud or...

BURGESS: It's a very good question, actually. I think I would have to suggest that they probably came from the Earth and went upwards. The interesting thing about that height is you're also about 10 to 12 miles above the ozone layer. And, of course, that means that above that you've got a lot of UV radiation. And these bacteria seem to be very resistant to ultraviolet, which is another interesting property of them. But our work shows that they, you know, they may well be more widespread than was previously thought.

FLATOW: And that raises all kinds of questions. Let me ask you this one. So your samples came from the mud, and they came from a marine environment? Is that correct?

BURGESS: That's right. We - I mean, I've been interested in marine bacteria for many years because of their great diversity. And what we did - in fact, what a student of mine did is he took a sample from estuary mud from the River Wear, which is a river in the northeast of England. And we brought that mud back to the lab and set up a microbial fuel cell with my colleague Professor Keith Scott, who is an expert on microbial fuel cells. And it was kind of interesting.

Initially, it just stayed in the lab and didn't do anything for a couple of weeks. And then very slowly it started to generate electricity as the bacteria adapted to that environment. So it was quite exciting to see the current starting to increase, you know, after a couple of weeks of it just looking like it wasn't going to work. So it's very exciting.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. And you made enough electricity that you could light up a little light emitting diode bulb with it.

BURGESS: That's right. I mean obviously we have experimental fuel cells like this. I mean the electrode is just a couple of inches by a couple of inches. So these are very small experimental electrodes, and in general they produce relatively small amounts of electricity. And to put it into some kind of context that your listeners might understand, it's probably about 100th the electrical power of, say, a car battery, something like that.

FLATOW: That's still pretty good. One hundred...

BURGESS: Absolutely.

FLATOW: Yeah.

BURGESS: You know, one of the ways to improve that is to actually have a lot of these systems in series, and you can actually increase the power that you would be able to gain from them.

FLATOW: Is this bacterium pretty good at what it does? Is it better than others of its kind of making electricity?

BURGESS: Sure. I mean, one of the interesting things about our study is that as a microbiologist, I'm very interested in bacterial slime, if you will. And we were trying to analyze exactly which species of bacteria where in this - growing on this electrode, there's a layer of slime actually producing the electricity. So what we did is we separated out about 70 different species of bacteria, and then we individually checked each one to see how much electricity it was making. And, you know, the winner by far and away, with about 10 times the electrical - electricity producing power of all the others was this bacillus stratosferica. So there's something very unusual about it that we're currently studying.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Do you imagine there might be others that are unfound, yet to be discovered?

BURGESS: Absolutely. I mean, I think, if there's one thing that's clear, it's that there are a vast number of bacteria, which we, you know, we don't even know how to grow them in the laboratory. And yet, genetic tools tell us that they are there, so you can, kind of, tantalizingly see fingerprints of them using molecular techniques. But we don't how to grow them in the lab and therefore we can't study them very well. And so another exciting aspect of our study is that we actually grew these in the lab and, you know, we were able to study them subsequently.

FLATOW: So you were lucky because, as you say, what - 90 percent of bacteria in the world can't be grown in the laboratory.

BURGESS: That's right. That's right. And it's very frustrating if you're a microbiologist.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

FLATOW: But, you know, as a microbiologist, aren't you sort of tempted to tinker with the inner-workings of the bacterium and say, I can genetically engineer a better one now that I have this one?

BURGESS: Well, I mean, I think, that - I mean, certainly was of that opinion, you know, a long time ago, in the 1980s and early 1990s. But the more you look at the bacteria that are out there in nature, the more you realize that in fact they're pretty good at what they do. I mean, they've been around on the planet Earth for about 300 and a bit billion years. And so they have been, you know, they've been around and they've been able to perfect these processes really quite well. And so it's very difficult to, you know, actually try to engineer improvements with any great accuracy. So I'm a great believe in searching for naturally occuring bacteria that already do what you want them to do, if you see what I mean.

FLATOW: Yeah. A couple of questions for you. When might we see some practical application come out of the bacteria? Can you...

BURGESS: Well, I mean, it was interesting, in your introductory remarks you said it might be possible one day to kind of put a stick in the ground and it would extract electricity from the soil. You know, a couple of scientists a few years ago have already done that, amazingly, by putting a fuel cell into some marine sediment to the bottom of the sea. And that can actually generate electricity already from the sediment at the bottom of the sea. And so scientists are looking to see how they can actually provide an electricity source for things like sensing apparatus that would measure temperature and current and so on, and beam that data back up to the surface for, you know, ocean scientists to collect.

FLATOW: There's an old song in America. "There's a hole..."

BURGESS: (Unintelligible) applications are not far way at all.

FLATOW: "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." And now, we know what goes into that, a little marine sensing device. And you have been studying marine bacteria for decades, right? And you think that's a really fertile place to find interesting, new creatures.

BURGESS: It is. I mean, as you said, I mean, I've been studying about marine bacteria now for about 25 years or so. And, you know, they never seize to amaze me. I think there are some really amazing examples of bacteria out there. And I suppose one thing that fascinates me is how complicated they are. You know, we found a few years go that bacteria actually have a sense of smell.

FLATOW: Really?

BURGESS: So that, you know, they can actually detect each other by monitoring molecules that are in the air. And we found that bacteria actually detect each other by monitoring ammonia, and they change their behavior as a result. So we were amazed by that, and it just shows you the complexity of the ways in which bacteria can communicate with each other.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. And you study something called snot worms, correct?

BURGESS: Well, that's - they are incredible. Yeah. I mean, to give it a full name, it's actually a bone-eating snot worm. And these are very, very unusual marine creatures that live at the depths of the sea. And - I mean, if you ever thought about what happens when something large like a whale dies - so, you know, a whale, when it dies, will sink to the bottom of the ocean and there will be a whole load of fat and oil for marine creatures to eat. And, you know, once the meat and the blubber, if you like, have all been eaten by other creatures, you're left with huge whale bones.

And along come these snot worms. And what they do is they actually colonize the bones, and they are effectively a worm with a whole big root structure, which burrows into the bone and actually dissolves the bone and extracts nutrients from the bone and takes these nutrients up inside the worm as a food source. And one of the most bizarre things about snot worms is that they have no mouth and no anus, and so they actually absorb these nutrients directly through these root structures.

And if you look a little bit further at the root structure, you find that the root structures are actually packed full of symbiotic bacteria that exude enzymes and so on, to be able to break down these fats and oils and in fact the bone itself and pass the nutrients back to the worm. You know, it's almost like a science-fiction story, but this is real.

FLATOW: Well, you've given us something to think about today, Dr. Burgess. Thank you very much. Fascinating.

Once the chief driver of Internet innovation, porn long since ceded to the video game industry when it comes to influencing anything cutting edge. Now, the Internet's oldest profession, which gave us online payments, super speedy connections and pop-up windows (among other mixed blessings), finds itself cutting-and-pasting on the backs of others.?

Case in point, Offbeatr, "the first crowdfunding resource specifically designed for the adult industry," aka Kickstarter for porn. ?(Yes, the name. Let's just ... move on, shall we?)

Why does the adult industry need a crowdfunding platform??

If you really have to ask, the Offbeatr website explains:?

Raising money for an "adult" project even more difficult. Pair that together with easy access to "free porn" and it makes you wonder. Is there a real future for the adult industry?

Like Kickstarter, the Internet's most popular crowdfunding website, Offbeatr provides a platform for creators to present their projects. Supporters pledge money toward a designated goal, and are only charged if that goal is met. And that's not all:?

Offbeatr offers fans a way to directly support their favorite adult performers, studios and content makers. Supporters receive unique rewards offered by Creators. Supporters could visit a movie set or add executive producer to their resume. It all depends on the unique rewards Creators choose to offer.

Pinterest, the social sharing darling of 2012, already has a couple of adult content clones, including Pornterest. That name alone reminds us that the adult film industry still enjoys a long history of co-opting mainstream movie titles ? "Lust of the Mohicans" is the safest-for-work example, you get the picture. So really, the only question regarding Kickstarter's new adult analog Offbeatr is ? what was the hold up? ??

Study finds variants that influence arsenic metabolism and increase risk for skin lesions

February 23, 2012 -- One of the first large-scale genomic studies conducted in a developing country has discovered genetic variants that elevate the risk for skin lesions in people chronically exposed to arsenic. Genetic changes found near the enzyme for metabolizing the chemical into a less toxic form can significantly increase an individual's risk for developing arsenic-related disease.

The discovery could point the way to new screening and intervention options for people who are exposed to groundwater with high levels of arsenic, according to the investigators at the University of Chicago Medicine, Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, and in Bangladesh. The study is published in PLoS Genetics.

The group's genome-wide association study, or GWAS, was conducted in nearly 3,000 individuals exposed to arsenic for decades in Bangladesh. Since the widespread installation of hand-pumped wells to tap groundwater sources in the 1970s, as many as 77 million people about half the population of Bangladesh have been accidentally exposed to dangerous levels of arsenic. The World Health Organization calls the exposure "the largest mass poisoning of a population in history."

For more than a decade, the scientists have studied the epidemiology of arsenic-related disease, such as skin lesions, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses, in this population, as well as the effectiveness of interventions to prevent toxicity. In the new study, the researchers sought genetic answers for why some individuals appear to be at higher risk for developing disease after arsenic exposure.

"These results add clarity to the genetic architecture that is playing a role in arsenic toxicity and its underlying biology," said senior author Habibul Ahsan, MD, MMedSc, Louis Block Professor of health studies, medicine and human genetics at the University of Chicago Medicine. "It's a rare type of study for a major problem affecting millions of people around the world, and it opens up opportunities for genetic studies of other major public health problems in developing countries."

The researchers genotyped thousands of arsenic-exposed individuals from the group's main studies for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) throughout the genome, and looked for associations with arsenic metabolite levels and risk of skin lesions.

The genetic findings provide strong evidence that efficient metabolism of arsenic through methylation protects against the toxin. Compounds that boost methylation, such as folic acid, could reduce arsenic toxicity a strategy currently being tested by co-author Mary Gamble, PhD, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

"If we could somehow find a way to do that in Bangladesh, it would make individuals much better methylators of arsenic, and as this current study shows if you're a better methylator you're at a lower risk for disease," said co-author Joseph Graziano, PhD, professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Director of Superfund Research Program at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University.

Beyond the clinical applications, the current study demonstrates that large-scale genomic studies are possible in a largely rural population of a developing country. The study offers a rare example of a GWAS result with clear, immediate potential for translational impact.

"These results add clarity to the genetic architecture that is playing a role in arsenic toxicity and its underlying biology," said senior author Habibul Ahsan, MD, MMedSc, Louis Block Professor of health studies, medicine and human genetics at the University of Chicago Medicine. "It's a rare type of study for a major problem affecting millions of people around the world, and it opens up opportunities for genetic studies of other major public health problems in developing countries."

The researchers genotyped thousands of arsenic-exposed individuals from the group's main studies for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) throughout the genome, and looked for associations with arsenic metabolite levels and risk of skin lesions.

The genetic findings provide strong evidence that efficient metabolism of arsenic through methylation protects against the toxin. Compounds that boost methylation, such as folic acid, could reduce arsenic toxicity a strategy currently being tested by co-author Mary Gamble, PhD, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

"If we could somehow find a way to do that in Bangladesh, it would make individuals much better methylators of arsenic, and as this current study shows if you're a better methylator you're at a lower risk for disease," said co-author Joseph Graziano, PhD, professor of Environmental Health Sciences and Director of Superfund Research Program at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University.

Beyond the clinical applications, the current study demonstrates that large-scale genomic studies are possible in a largely rural population of a developing country. The study offers a rare example of a GWAS result with clear, immediate potential for translational impact.

Updating interfaces for iPad 3: Why your favorite app might take a while to go Retina

Depending on how an app was designed and developed, updating for an iPad 3 Retina display could take days or weeks

Flash forward ? After lining up for hours, or sitting at home all day waiting for a courier to arrive, you finally have your hands on an iPad 3 with its amazing Retina display. A display with over 3.1 million pixels. All of them difficult to distinguish, because they're so damn tiny. Text is crisp. Photos look are amazing. This thing is gorgeous. You launch your favourite app and notice things aren't as amazing as they were a few seconds ago. The app in question doesn't contain Retina image assets -- the pictures that make up the user interface elements are at the iPad 2's screen resolution, so things look as blocky as they did on your previous iPad. What's going on?

Why Glee's Grant Gustin Hopes Sebastian Is the Heir to the Sue Sylvester Throne (omg!)

One day after Glee aired its winter finale ? which included an attempted suicide, a win at Regionals, a near-exchange of matrimonial I do's, and a surprise car wreck ? Grant Gustin was back at it, auditioning for film roles while the regular cast shot its next episode.

At the moment, Gustin doesn't know the fate of his controversial alter-ego Sebastian, the smarmy Warbler introduced as this season's threat to New Directions. Karofsky's tragedy appears, for now, to have shaken him of his diabolical ways, but up until then, well, to paraphrase Santana, Sebastian seemed to have been borne from such '80s jerk-offs as Pretty in Pink's Steff (James Spader) and Some Kind of Wonderful's Hardy (Craig Scheffer).

"I'm on an episode-to-episode basis, so as of now, I haven't filmed anything for the return in the spring," Gustin told TVGuide.com. "It's all up in the air right now, and I have no idea what's next for him to be honest."

A month ago, reports surfaced that Gustin, whose professional credits include the Broadway revival of West Side Story and more recently an episode of CSI: Miami, would be promoted to a series regular next season. But that isn't a done deal. "They have an option on me," Gustin said. "Basically, if I am to be back next year, that's most likely what would happen. But they haven't asked me back yet, and I don't know if that's going to be the case."

But does Sebastian deserve an encore? Gustin, 22, says he hasn't been given a backstory for the guy outside of his likes ? ?lacrosse, Lima Bean, Scandals, Courvoisier ? ?and he doesn't deny that the guy's been pretty uniformly awful. But rather than looking to outright bad guys, he says he drew inspiration from Coach Sue (Jane Lynch). "I wasn't playing the '80s villain thing," he said. "Actually, the first thing I obviously thought to channel was the energy that Jane Lynch brings to Sue Sylvester. We've seen her softer side, and she does both mean and soft in this incredibly honest way. So I tried to do that. I tried to think, OK, this guy believes everything he's saying, and maybe he's doing it for insecure reasons or maybe he's just that confident. I just tried to be honest about it."?

And just as Sue has been revealed gradually ? ?through her sister, romantic relationships and a bout of depression ? ?Gustin hopes the same might be done for Sebastian. "There are plenty of possibilities if they do bring me back," he said. "What happened to Karofsky hit very close to home for him. It shocked him into reality, I think. I was surprised it happened so soon. I don't know if the snarkiness is gone now or if he's a nice guy, but seeing a different side of him is exciting."

But Glee still has a lot of work to do if they're going to try and ingratiate the guy who nearly blinded Blaine (Darren Criss) with fans. "After the Michael Jackson episode, after that slushie... yeah, everyone hates Sebastian," Gustin laughed. "It's hard sometimes, but I guess that's the point. I just have to appreciate that." And while it made sense for Blaine to join New Directions once he and Kurt became a couple, none of the writers have communicated a Season 4 Sebastian game plan to Gustin. He and the other recurring actors ? ?including Vanessa Lengies and Damian McGinty ? ?are called back on an as-needed basis.

"It's very last-minute, but that's not their fault. They've got a huge cast and an unbelievable amount of material and people that they're working with," Gustin said. "The fact that it's last-minute, you just have to understand and respect it. It's been crazy, though. I was in Virginia visiting my family when I found out I was gonna be in the 'Michael' episode, and they asked if I could be in the studio the next day. I said, 'Sure!' and got on a red eye that night. It's just the way it is, and you kind of roll with it because it's an amazing experience."

The plan calls for three separate phases: Establishing an open, free, and globally accessible satellite communication network, put a human into orbit, and land on the Moon. Interestingly enough, there is already considerable work being done on the second phase of this plan by the Copenhagen Suborbitals, and Google's own Lunar X Prize is trying to spur development of robotic missions to the Moon. But what about the first phase? Answering the call is the 'Shackspace,' a hackerspace from Stuttgart, Germany, who've begun work on an ambitious project they're calling the 'Hackerspace Global Grid.'"
