Mercedes reveals details of new electric sports car

Expected to be launched in 2013, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has finally revealed details of its E-CELL electric sports car, which has been in development since 2010.

The update focuses on the vehicle?s drivetrain which is set to feature four synchronous electric motors that will be positioned underneath the wheels. They will provide peak output of 392kW and torque of 880Nm. It helps the model accelerate from 0-62mph in just four seconds; placing it close to the SLS AMG with a 6.3litre V8 engine that can reach the same speed in 3.8seconds.

Among the key features of the drivetrain are:

- Four compact electric motors: They each reach a rotational speed of 12,000rpm and are positioned close to the wheels. Power is transmitted with one transmission per each axle.

- All-wheel drive: Dynamics, driving safety, handling and ride comfort are boosted because of the intelligent distribution of drive torque. Indeed each individual wheel can be electrically driven and electrically braked, depending on the driving conditions.

- Lithium-ion battery: The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-CELL includes a liquid-cooled high voltage lithium-ion battery with a modular design. It has an energy content of 48kWh and it makes use of technology from Formula 1 including the KERS hybrid concept.

- Lightweight structure: The vehicle includes the lightweight performance design strategy. This sees the battery located in a carbon fibre monocoque; while the CFRP components are around 50 per cent lighter than comparable steel parts. In addition, the ceramic brake discs are 40 per cent lighter than the previous grey cast iron brake discs.
