Cell Phones Quickly Revolutionizing Retail - Business Opportunities ...

Guardian Professional:

The retail industry is experiencing a revolution on a par with the introduction of plastic payments in the 1950s or the launch of the internet and e-commerce in the early 1990s. The mobile device, a gadget we check more than 200 times every day, is changing the way we discover and buy products and services.

PayPal predicts that we won?t have physical wallets by 2016. Visa Europe predicts that 50% of all its transactions will be made via mobile by 2020, and retailers are already reporting that up to 12% of their traffic comes from mobile channels (eDigitalResearch, May 2011). There is no doubt the market is buzzing with expectation and retailers are starting to catch-on.

As the internet caught fire and UK consumers flocked to buy anything from music files to bicycle parts online, many retailers were left struggling to catch up with this changing retail model. The challenge was to retain customers, but competition was coming from new players who understood search engine optimisation (SEO), online marketing and the customer?s desire to buy anything from them at any time.

(AP) ? The Wall Street analysts who know Facebook best are giving the company's stock a mixed review. Think: like, not love.

A flood of analyst reports from 33 banks gave Facebook's stock a mix of "Neutral" and "Buy" ratings on Wednesday. And there was at least one review that equated to a "Sell" rating.

It marked the end of the 40-day quiet period following Facebook's initial public offering. Analysts at banks that led the IPO were finally allowed to give public opinions on the stock, offering the first glimpse of what the IPO's underwriters really think about Facebook.

Facebook's much-ballyhooed IPO landed with a thud on May 18, with the stock closing just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It hasn't fared much better since. On Wednesday, the stock fell 87 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $32.23. That's 15 percent below the IPO price.

Morgan Stanley, the lead bank in the IPO, gave a $38 target price for Facebook's stock over the next 12 months. That's the same as the IPO price Facebook has failed to match since its first day of trading. The analyst, Scott Devitt, said Facebook has long-term opportunities in mobile advertising despite recent concerns.

"The mobile ad market remains in its infancy ? while we believe Facebook will lead the market in mobile ad targeting, agency and brand transitions to mobile may take longer than expected," Devitt wrote.

Facebook derives the bulk of its revenue from advertising on its website, and while it has been testing mobile ad products, it warned before its IPO that its mobile users are growing at a faster rate than the revenue that it's making from them. The disclosure spooked some investors ahead of the company's initial public offering last month, and likely contributed to the stock's lukewarm reception.

William Blair's Ralph Schackart also gave the stock an "Outperform" rating, and said Facebook is "becoming a daily utility," making it difficult for people to switch to a different platform.

"While virtual, the social interaction that users engage in via updates, status changes, likes, shares, and playlists, among others, builds long-term relationships and audiences," Schackart wrote.

Mark S. Mahaney of Citi Investment Research also called Facebook an Internet utility, comparing it with the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. Facebook, he noted, will soon reach 1 billion monthly users and 600 million daily average users.

"By any comparison, these are startlingly impressive metrics," wrote Mahaney in a note to investors. "Facebook could, in fact, become the largest (Internet) platform one day in terms of revenue and profits, given the size and engagement of its user base and its high-margin business model."

Nonetheless, Mahaney put a "Neutral" rating on Facebook's stock, calling the company's dual-class stock structure one of the biggest investment risks. Facebook, like several other technology and media companies, has two classes of shares in order to keep voting control in the hands of its executives and early employees. CEO Mark Zuckerberg controls the company through more than half of its voting stock.

Credit Suisse found "a lot to 'like'" with Facebook, but gave its stock a "Neutral" rating and a target price of $34. Analyst Spencer Wang said that while Facebook is in a good position to capitalize on the growth of social media, its stock price already reflects a "fair amount" of this growth, limiting his enthusiasm.

Goldman Sachs, which owns a small stake in Facebook and was one of the leading underwriters of its IPO, gave the social network a "Buy" rating. Analyst Heather Bellini said that the company is poised to dominate the next phase of the Internet's evolution, "and as such will maintain industry high growth rates throughout next decade."

A rare "Underperform" rating came from Daniel Salmon at BMO Capital Markets. He gave the stock a $25 target price and said that his research shows "mixed" opinions on the effectiveness of advertising on Facebook.

Two years later?

I had my own office. I was a manager. Manager of half of the customer service representatives. I got a pay increase, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, paid vacations, the whole working man?s gig. I had more money that I ever thought I?d have in my savings account. Shit, I had a savings account! I had enough money to buy a new car, a new TV, I got a cell phone, a good one, the kind that had the game Snake on it, a new sofa, and a new computer. Not that crappy thing Xavier gave to me years back, but one that was really fast, held a lot more memory, and I was able to afford DSL, a new thing to connect to and surf the internet faster.

I wore suits to work. Nice shoes, a crisp tie, pressed slacks, a form fitting blazer, and my hair was clean cut. Even when I got home from work, I didn?t immediately get into my pajamas like I used to. I?d loosen my tie, take off my jacket, and cook myself a good steak, some steamed vegetables, and drink a glass of wine. I gained twenty pounds.

I hung out with my coworkers a lot. We?d go to bars or restaurants after work, eat things that were more expensive that fast food hamburgers and sodas. We?d talk about the new company program implemented the week before, the new girl in accounting, or planning a weekend to Vegas.

Five days a week, woke up at 6 in the morning, got to work by 7:50, went to lunch at 12:35, left work at 3:30, met up with my coworkers somewhere, eat or drink, for a couple of hours, and then got home by 8pm. Watched TV for a couple more, fall asleep, get up at 6 and do the same thing. On the weekends, I?d meet up with coworkers and drink more, eat more, talk to girls more, and then wait for Monday to come around to start it all over again.

Two years, that was my life.?I lived comfortably. I was content. It was all a blur.

Opinion: Euro 2012 gets its best game?? and pain

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:27 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -In world football, there surely is no greater anguish than a penalty shoot-out involving England.

It's agony to watch because you know in advance how it will end - with England players, proud men like Steven Gerrard, walking like the dead off the pitch, alone in a world of torment, regret and what-ifs after falling short once again in the toughest, cruelest test this sport, any sport, has devised for players' minds.

This time, against Italy in the most enthralling of the four Euro 2012 quarterfinals, the names that got added to England's hall of penalty infamy were both Ashleys, Young and Cole.

The winger and the left back swelled the sorry group of England players who cracked while faced with just an opposing goalkeeper and their own fear of failure. Their predecessors included the likes of David Beckham and Gareth Southgate, who managed to turn the shame of his missed penalty at Euro '96 into a joke, appearing in a pizza commercial with his head hidden in a paper bag.

And Cole and Young won't be the last. Because England's record of failure in shootouts is now so consistently awful that it has become a running sore on the national psyche.

The loss to Italy took England's record in seven World Cup and European Championship shootouts to: Rest of the world 6, England 1.

One.

Uno.

Ein.

No matter the language, that is the astounding number.

Luck is part of it. So is preparation. But mostly, penalty shootouts are won between the ears. They are about confidence, belief and being able to shut out that inner voice whispering, "You are going to miss this." The goal looks smaller than it is, the 'keeper looms like a giant.

Gerrard, who slotted home England's first penalty early Monday morning after 120 minutes of football ended 0-0, has described England's penalty curse as a "mental block." In his biography, he suggested England must start practicing shootouts at the end of friendly matches, while the stadium is still full.

"It's the only realistic way of practicing penalties. That draining walk from the halfway line. The tension. That feeling that everyone is watching, jeering or cheering," the England and Liverpool captain wrote.

So that's an idea for the future. But, in Kiev's Olympic Stadium, it was just pain.

"We have done the country proud but again we go home with heartbreak and it's difficult to take," said Gerrard.

This was the 8th time that Italy has faced a shootout in World Cups and the Euros. It has now won three.

FIFA boss Sepp Blatter isn't a fan of shootouts, saying this May that "when football goes to penalty kicks, it loses its essence as a team sport."

He has asked German great Franz Beckenbauer to see if an alternative is possible.

But shootouts are unbeatable drama. This one was no exception.

Like gladiators about to face the lions together, the two 'keepers, Joe Hart and Italy's Gianluigi Buffon, shared a hand-slap of mutual respect before the shooting began.

England assistant coach Gary Neville threw a pen in anger into the turf - as if he knew that this would end in English tears again.

"Send us victorious, happy and glorious" the England fans sang. Two physios pounded and massaged Gerrard's legs like pizza dough, readying the England captain's tired muscles for the torture ahead.

Italy's Riccardo Montolivo was the first to crack, firing his penalty wide of Hart's right-hand post. He buried his head in his hands. Perhaps, just perhaps, this might be England's night after all.

But no.

Young shot high, his penalty slamming off Buffon's crossbar. England manager Roy Hodgson chewed his lip.

Next up for England was Cole. The Chelsea player nervously licked his lips on the long walk from the center of the pitch to the penalty spot. He placed the ball on the turf, took seven steps back and stood hands on hips.

Uh-oh, clearly, he was thinking about it too much. Sure enough, his run-up was slow and his shot to Buffon's left was tame. The Italian guessed correctly, making the block.

Alessandro Diamanti then finished the job, ramming the dagger through English hearts by shooting cleanly past Hart.

Cue Italian delirium.

Buffon puffed out his cheeks in relief.

Neutrals would say that justice was done. Italy was the better team.

But that will be of no consolation to the English.

"Penalties has become an obsession for us in English football and in training they have done extremely well," Hodgson said. "But you can't reproduce the tired legs. You can't reproduce the pressure. You can't reproduce the nervous tension."

Egypt braces for Islamist president, or army rule

Source: reuters // Reuters

* Election result to be announced at 1300 GMT

* Islamist victory spoken of by many, but not certain

* Talks between ruling council and Brotherhood

* Army rejects demands it reverse curbs on presidency

By Alastair Macdonald and Tamim Elyan

CAIRO, June 24 (Reuters) - Five hundred days after they overthrew Hosni Mubarak, Egyptians will finally have a new president on Sunday, the first they have chosen freely and who may well be from the Muslim Brotherhood, which Mubarak and fellow generals spent a lifetime fighting.

The result of last weekend's run-off, due in an election committee news conference at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT), will be historic for Egypt and the Middle East. Many think Islamist Mohamed Morsy will become head of state of the biggest Arab nation, reshaping the region after decades of Western-backed military rule, even if the armed forces are not giving up their control just yet.

The Brotherhood may react angrily if it is instead Ahmed Shafik, a former air force commander and Mubarak ally. His victory many Egyptians, and millions across the region, would fear as a mortal blow to last year's Arab Spring revolution, despite his assurances of also wanting an inclusive government.

After an anxious week of street protests at Cairo's Tahrir Square and angry accusations between rivals of subverting the new democracy, the new president will emerge with fewer powers than the candidates, pruned by a first round of voting in May, had expected when the army promised civilian rule from July 1.

The ruling military council, which pushed Mubarak aside to appease the protesters in the streets, has just stripped the post of many powers and dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament elected in January. Yet the presidency is still a prize, even if the vote will not end the power struggles over Egypt's future.

An Islamist president of Egypt would be a major milestone for the Middle East, near unthinkable 18 months ago. It is far from confirmed. But the military, Brotherhood and other officials gave signs of expecting it will happen.

Brotherhood supporters camped out in Tahrir Square, where the revolution was won, were generally in festive mood, though fear of disappointment still nagged, after decades of rigged elections. In counterpoint, a few thousand rallied on Saturday in a middle-class Cairo suburb to declare support for the army.

Morsy, a 60-year-old, U.S.-educated engineer and political prisoner under Mubarak, declared victory within hours of polls closing last Sunday - a move condemned by the generals. In a sign of continued confidence, he has already met other groups and drafted an accord to form a national coalition government.

His party issued a statement on Saturday saying it had called on "all partners in the nation, from all movements, to take part in this national platform, to guarantee the success of what we have achieved and their active participation in rebuilding the country in the manner it deserves".

One of those involved, Abdel Gelil Mostafa of the reformist National Association for Change, told Reuters on Saturday: "We agreed on a general programme, especially for if Morsy won.

"That seems probable. But, we will know tomorrow."

BROTHERHOOD, ARMY TALKS

By contrast supporters of Shafik, 70, who was Mubarak's last prime minister in his final desperate days, kept a low profile, although he did declare publicly on Thursday he was confident.

A victory for Shafik, who won backing in the run-off from many who decided they liked religious rule even less than a candidate drawn from the familiar military establishment, could spark protests from well-organised Islamist movements, which the army and security forces might confront on the streets.

Reformist politician Mohamed ElBaradei said he had been in contact with the army and Morsy's camp to avoid a showdown, but said he was worried that, if Shafik were declared winner, "we are in for a lot of instability and violence ... a major uprising." His comments were carried by CNN on Saturday.

However, there have been indications from senior figures in the Brotherhood and military council that they have prepared for a Morsy presidency in meetings since the election.

While officials deny any negotiation over the long drawn out process of tallying the election results themselves, there would be greater scope for compromise to defuse tension over what many have called the army's "soft coup", against parliament and the powers of the president, if Morsy is made head of state.

The Brotherhood has said it will go on protesting until the military council cancels the dissolution and a decree which gave its legislative powers to itself, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). But were its candidate to be confirmed in office, then the wary symbiosis between the two old enemies, seen since Mubarak was ousted, may continue in a new form.

It is a collaboration that irks many of the secular liberals who led the first wave of the uprising against Mubarak but found themselves fragmented and eliminated in last month's first round of voting, left with a difficult choice between army and Islam.

MILITARY ROLE

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters were in Tahrir Square again on Saturday, chanting "Victory for Morsy!" and "Morsy, Morsy, Allahu akbar!" (God is greatest), while waving national flags.

"We want the military council to announce the real results without forgery," said Hassan Eissa, 43, an accountant from north of Cairo who was demonstrating on the square.

"They have no right," Eissa said. "Egyptians shouldn't be under any kind of guardianship after the revolution."

The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure on Feb. 11, 2011, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

While they have said that inaugurating the new president by July 1 will meet the deadline they set themselves for civilian rule, their moves in the past 10 days to curb the presidency and hang on to a veto over legislation, as well as to claim a role in drafting a new constitution, mean that the process goes on.

Washington and the European Union, both major aid donors, have expressed concern that the military is backtracking. But both also share its anxiety over a sweeping Islamist takeover, worried about Egypt turning anti-Western and reneging on its peace with Israel, and also voicing concern for civil rights.

Violence by hardline Islamists in Tunisia, whose revolt inspired that in Egypt, has troubled many Egyptian liberals.

Key to the transition to democracy will be drafting a constitution. That work has been hostage to partisan wrangling in the now defunct parliament, where one assembly collapsed after complaints it was too Islamist and a second faces a challenge in court on Tuesday that many expect to trigger a clause in the SCAF decree letting it name a new drafting panel.

The Brotherhood has portrayed itself as a modern movement, ready to work with others and willing to respect treaties. Some supporters cite the example of Turkey as a model - a Muslim democracy with a history of military interference in politics, where devout, elected politicians have slowly asserted control.

The bearded, bespectacled Morsy was not a familiar figure to Egyptians. Some ridicule him as the movement's "spare tyre"; his campaign began after a more senior leader was barred from the race. Critics say he would be a mere front-man as president, for less visible pillars of the Brotherhood behind the scenes. OfficeTime (for iPad)

I've heard that most small business owners and other self-employed types actually earn more money, not less, when they increase the accuracy of how they count billable hours. The iPad app OfficeTime ($7.99) gives contractors, lawyers, consultants, and other on-the-go professionals the tools they need to make the bucks they deserve. OfficeTime records billable hours to the minute and expenses to the penny. It contains tools for managing projects and clients with ease, while also providing great flexibility and customization for a business's unique needs. And because it's a one-time purchase with no subscription fees or add-on costs, OfficeTime for iPad is a bargain and a PCMag Editors' Choice product.

When coupled with the desktop version of OfficeTime ($47, 4.5 stars, also an Editors' Choice), available for Windows and Mac, which adds an entire invoicing system, OfficeTime for iPad is one of the most valuable apps a busy professional can own.

OfficeTime Set Up
OfficeTime takes no time at all to set up. Zero. Download the app, and it's ready to go. You can start by entering some of the projects on your roster and typical tasks (called "categories") that show up on your clients' bills, but it's not necessary, as you can just as easily enter projects and tasks as they come up.

The app also has tools for logging set one-time expenses, like transportation reimbursement and materials costs.

When you create a billable category, there are two fields: one for the name of the category, and one for the hourly rate. In the desktop version of OfficeTime, you can adjust the software's setting so that in your final reports, the billable time can round up, down, or to the nearest minute, quarter hour, or whatever interval you set, but the iPad app sticks with minutes only, so any rounding that you want to do has to happen manually. You can simply adjust the figure if you need to, which is also helpful for correcting errors.

Billing Clients
Projects and categories go a long way toward helping you keep track of your work as a whole, and when the time comes to actually start monitoring how much time goes into something, OfficeTime is just as thorough. Select the project and category for the work you're about to do, or hit "New Session" to create a new record on the spot, then simply hit the "play" button that appears next to it. The item in question will turn green while OfficeTime switches on the timer. The app counts minutes and hours, which you can see adding up right in the app itself, and gives you a price total to-date at the bottom of the screen.

Switch to different apps, and OfficeTime keeps counting. If your iPad screen dims or goes black, for example during a meeting, OffceTime keeps counting. The timer only stops when you turn it off, effectively preventing you from being distracted by it. In the desktop version of OfficeTime, you can resize the timer window so that it's minimal but always in view as you work?but that's just not possible on an iPad, unfortunately. I would love to see a timer that could overlay on other apps.

Exporting Reports, But No Invoicing
The iPad version of OfficeTime does not contain a complete invoicing system (nor should anyone expect it to for the ridiculously low price of $7.99), but it can export the data on hand by project, date, week, and more. Exporting data puts it into your choice of file formats (Excel, Numbers, or tab-delimited plain text), which is then attached to an email.

If an invoicing system is what you're after, a very good one is included with the desktop software OfficeTime for Windows or Mac. You can even sync the desktop version with the mobile app via Wi-Fi so that the two are always accurate and up to date.

The Mobile SMB's Best Friend
OfficeTime for iPad is the kind of app that will pay for itself in no time?minutes, perhaps, due to its remarkably low price ($7.99). Nimble, inexpensive, and highly practical, OfficeTime belongs on every SMB's iPad.

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: Quick Blogging Tips ...

Before you sit down and start to write, it?s important to note that writing for a blog is different than writing for other mediums such as academia or the press. That being said, what type of content works well with blogs? Where academic papers and press releases lean toward the more formal side of the spectrum, blog content tends to be more informal and sometimes even personal in nature.

This does not mean that blog content should be badly written, however, because poorly thought out or grammatically incorrect posts can have a negative impact on your visitors. Blogs with well thought out and easy to read content tend to have more followers than ones that do not.

To increase your readership, you?ll want to write informative and engaging posts that will encourage your visitors to leave comments and share your blog with their family and friends. The more engaging your blog?s content is, the more people will hear about it. The more people who hear about your blog, the more traffic it will eventually get.

Now obviously blogs are very diverse in scope and overall objectives, so what works well on one blog may not necessarily work on the next. If you are unsure about how you want to go about writing for your blog, feel free to test out different writing styles or levels of formality and see what works best for you and your visitors.

Mesothelioma Symptoms | anti cancer blog

Since mesothelioma is such a rare form of cancer, many people who develop mesothelioma symptoms have never even heard of this disease and are unaware of its symptoms.

Most of the body?s internal organs are covered with a protective sac called the mesothelium. Mesothelioma cancer occurs when malignant or cancerous cells appear in the mesothelium. The lungs, heart, and abdominal organs are the most commonly affected organs. Of these, the lung lining (plueral mesothelioma) is most typically infected.

Exposure to asbestos is almost always the cause of mesothelioma. Prior to 1975, asbestos was one of the materials commonly used in the manufacture of building materials. In most cases, symptoms of mesothelioma do not appear for 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, malignant mesothelioma caused 2,704 deaths during 2005. So, even though asbestos has been used sparsely since 1975, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that deaths caused by mesothelioma will peak during 2010.

Until it reaches advanced stages, this form of cancer provides very few obvious symptoms. It remains dormant for years; however, when it becomes active it quickly attacks the mesothelium and becomes almost impossible to treat successfully. The CDC estimates that 75% of the people who discover symptoms will die within one year of being diagnosed with this cancer. The remainder will die 6 months to several years later.

Plueral mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining) represents approximately 3 out of 4 of the cases diagnosed. Typical symptoms of this type of mesothelioma include shortness of breath and or/chronic coughing. Of course, since these symptoms are similar to those of allergies or the common cold, it does not occur to most people that they are infected with this type of cancer.

Peritoneal mesothelioma (cancer of the stomach and intestines) also exhibits symptoms that are not obviously recognizable as cancer, such as anemia and fever.

It is important to understand that mesothelioma generally takes decades to develop, but once mesothelioma symptoms are discovered (properly diagnosed) it quickly becomes aggressive. The best course of action is to become aware of the symptoms and to immediately seek diagnosis and treatment.

If it is indeed nobler to give than to receive, it may also make you happier even if you're a toddler, according to a new study co-authored by three psychologists at the University of British Columbia.

The study, published in PLoS One, an on-line journal from the Public Library of Science, finds that toddlers under the age of two are happier when giving treats to others than receiving treats themselves. Furthermore, children are happier when they give their own treats away than when they give an identical treat that doesn't belong to them.

These findings support recent research showing that adults feel good when they help others and may help explain why people act pro-socially, even when doing so involves personal cost. This is the first study to show that giving to others makes young children happy.

"People tend to assume that toddlers are naturally selfish," said Dr. Lara Aknin, who co-authored the study with UBC colleagues Profs. Kiley Hamlin and Elizabeth Dunn. "These findings show that children are actually happier giving than receiving."

During the study, each toddler received some treats, such as Goldfish crackers. A few minutes later, the toddler was asked to give one of these treats away to a puppet. In addition, the experimenter provided an extra treat and asked the child to give this to the puppet. The children's reactions were videotaped and later rated for happiness on a seven-point scale.

When toddlers shared their own treat with a puppet, they displayed greater happiness than when giving a treat provided by the researcher. This contrast underscores the role of personal sacrifice, and rather than finding it aversive, suggests that children find this behaviour emotionally rewarding.

"What's most exciting about these findings is that children are happiest when giving their own treats away," said Aknin, lead author of the study. "Forfeiting their own valuable resources for the benefit of others makes them happier than giving away just any treat."

These findings shed light on a long-standing puzzle: Why do humans help others, including people they've just met? Part of the answer, it seems, is that giving feels good. The fact that toddlers show the warm glow of giving suggests that the capacity to derive joy from helping others is deeply woven into human nature.
