Traditional Istanbul
The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered shopping areas in the world; it has stood on this site since the days of the Ottomans. Its the original that todays shopping malls are modelled on and remains a massive draw for locals and tourists alike. The colours and hustle bustle are an experience alone and the array of oriental and Asian goods on offer makes it an exciting and fascinating place to shop. You may have to dodge the zealous stall holders but their light hearted banter is a necessity. The competition between stallholders in the bazaar is fierce and they employ charm, tongue in cheek humour and striking displays to grab your attention.
If its a carpet you want to buy do not expect it to be a quick transaction. Of course you need to make your choice from the abundant supply but you will also be invited to take tea with your shop keeper and spend time haggling. Haggling is a must and nobody pays the original price; be prepared for a long transaction. The Grand Bazaar is also the place to buy fabric, linens, leather and jewellery but beware it is a huge space and it is advisable to get hold of a map of the bazaar to help you to navigate your way around.
If youre more interested in culinary shopping you should visit the Egyptian Bazaar in Eminnm, which is also known as the Spice Bazaar. As well as selling more spices and herbs than you can imagine exist it also sells dried fruit, cheeses and nuts along with lokum (Turkish Delight) the delicacy which bears no resemblance to the versions we are familiar with.
Contemporary Shopping
If you prefer to stay in the air conditioned comfort that is offered by the best hotels, Istanbul can meet your needs. Malls are a relatively new concept in the city but there is now a mall in most districts. A few worth mentioning are the Kanyon Shopping Centre, Istinye Park and Akmerkez, which was voted the best shopping centre in the world in 1996. If you would prefer to be out in the open you can also visit the Nianta district which attracts the sophisticated shopper.
Whether your preference is for the traditional or the modern Istanbul offers you enough choice to satisfy all your shopping needs.
